SWIMMING THERAPY
An important therapeutic attribute of swimming is that it is a non weight-bearing exercise. Because pain, paralysis, or even injury, sometimes results from bearing weight on debilitated limbs, patients may benefit more from swimming than from "dry" exercise. In addition to its therapeutic benefits during rehabilitation, swimming can also be an excellent conditioning activity.
Patients are fitted with a canine floatation device, which is worn at all times in our indoor heated pool. All pool activity is monitored by an attendant, who assists and helps support dogs while they swim. Our 15ft pool is ideal for lap swimming even large dogs, but also has the "endless" feature of jets at one end for dogs who benefit most from stationary swimming.
Our equipment is specifically maintained for therapeutic use. Household pools may be less suitable because of their lower temperature. Natural bodies of water are even less hospitable than human swimming pools and offer more potential for injury. Therapeutic swimming should be approved by a veterinarian and carefully monitored and controlled.
