OBESITY

Obesity is just as common a problem in pets as it is in humans. In fact, it is such a common problem in pets that when the average person sees a pet at its normal weight they usually believe it is too thin.  For pets the most frequent complication of obesity is the additional stress placed on the joints and supportive tissue of the body. This increased stress eventually results in deterioration of these important structures.  Pain and a decreased ability to function quickly follow. This results in a diminished activity level for your pet. The vicious cycle of declining exercise, less calories burned and increasing weight is established. Once the pain and tissue damage start to occur special measures need to be taken to break this cycle, because no one can exercise properly if they are in pain. By reducing your pet's weight you can increase the quality and quantity of their life.

At Healing Touch we have to knowledge and equipment necessary to institute an exercise program that can burn excess fat and strengthen weak tissues while minimizing the pain and damage associated with routine forms of exercise. Most therapy session start with warm up to improve circulation, relax tense muscles and enhance joint motion. Next comes muscle strengthening and calorie burning activities in a  low impact environment such as the underwater treadmill or the heated indoor swimming pool. The increased resistance of the water allows us to maximize the calories burned during the time spent exercising.  Diet consultation will be offered free of charge to any clients who have questions about the subject.
