Electrical stimulation uses a mild pulsed electrical current to stimulate nerves in the body. Therapeutic ultrasound uses sound waves to excite molecules in treated tissues. As with electrical stimulation, the sensations of therapeutic ultrasound are subtle and the treatment is hardly perceptible.

The physiologic effects of therapeutic ultrasound depend on the frequency, energy, and time of application. Ultrasound can heat tissue more deeply and effectively than topically applied heat sources. Its thermal effects can facilitate the movement of fluids around cells to provide better nutrition and remove waste. Cell metabolism in healing tissues may also be improved with ultrasound.

 

Electrical stimulation may be used to induce muscle contractions that increase joint motion, strengthen muscles, relieve muscle spasms, and improve muscular control. Electrical stimulation may also be employed in pain management to block pain impulses going to the brain.
