ACTIVE EXERCISE
Healing Touch offers many forms of active exercise for rehabilitation and conditioning. All exercise is carefully monitored and the duration and intensity are prescribed for each patient. Our aquatic exercises include heated indoor swimming pool and water treadmill therapies. The dry treadmill provides another exercise options, with its own therapeutic and conditioning benefits.
Cavaletti Rails are especially useful to increase active flexion and extension of joints as the animal negotiates the course. The height of the rails and the distance between them are adjusted to each dog. Dogs are led on a leash by an attendant, who carefully controls the speed to modulate the gait. The course can be modified for other activities, including weaving between poles. Weaving emphasizes side bending of the spinal column and promotes paraspinal muscle strengthening.
Stairs offer an active exercise option especially for dogs with mild infirmities or patients advanced in the recovery process. Dogs are assisted walking up and down stairs on a leash by an attendant. Stairs target certain muscle groups, especially the extensors of the hind limbs. Stair climbing strengthens, and improves range of motion, coordination, and balance.
